A WEEK AND WE’RE OFF……..

The decisions been made, the trucks have been serviced, the teams have been carefully picked…..and WE GOT OUR VISAS FOR ANGOLA!!

The busiest week so far of the trip with numerous visits into Accra to organise the paperwork for the next few months of the trip, embassy visits and money changing.

The route from north to south passing through Angola has been closed to Overlanders for the last two years with no visas being issued by any embassy close by, but then we found the Angolan Embassy in Accra which no-one even knew existed and arranged a meeting with the Ambassador.

Dressed a smartly as my wardrobe would allow and armed with the business plan and official documents we sat with Eduardo and explained the Afritrex project, what it means to the charities involved and also the years of planning that have gone into it.

He a fantastically receptive character who decided there and then that he could and would like to help to make it all possible and returned half an hour later after he’d telephoned the embassy in Point Noire to let them know of our impending arrival in a few weeks time. They will issue us with multiple entry visas which we’ll need to enable us to travel down through Cabinda and then on into Angola-real a week or so later!

This is some of the best news of the trip as it opens up the corridor down the left hand side of Africa and allows me to continue the journey as was originally planned….overland! Add to that the Nigerian Embassy issuing our visas within 48hrs and everything at the moment seems to be going really well again!

Now when I say we….this is now 9 people, of course not all in the Colonel just 3, but a Dutch friend who owns a MAN truck and is acting as the ‘service vehicle’ for the expedition, together with Kerry from Hong Kong, Alex from Aus and the Watkins family of 5 from Canada. Safety in numbers, reduced costs and more people to dig once we get stuck as we’re bound to……oh and of course a fantastic experience!

Wheels start turning in a week and Afritrex enters a new chapter, bring it on.

Welcome to Afritrex - A privately funded charity endurance challenge of marathons, mountains and more; documenting the encounters, obstacles and achievements of 12 months of hard fundraising and charity work across Africa.

Whilst circumnavigating the African Continent I will complete the following challenges:

  • To complete five marathons of at least 26 miles
  • To climb five of the highest mountains in Africa
  • To visit as many of the sites across Africa where the Victoria Cross has been won as possible (VC180 Challenge)

"The challenge to make every penny count"

Have a closer look at the site and find out more about how we'll be spending 2008.

Keep up to date !! - The action is happening as we speak...

Project Overview

My name is Ben Southall and for the last decade I’ve travelled extensively throughout Southern Africa taking on projects and expeditions to test my abilities and discover exciting new areas of the African continent, whilst in the UK I take part in fitness and endurance events to raise money for charity and thought it was about time I combined the two fields to create my own fundraising expedition from with others could benefit.

So was born Afritrex: the logistical equivalent of one man trying to build spaghetti junction using Taiwanese instructions and a broken shovel.

The idea was simple: take one continent; attempt to circumnavigate it and whilst doing so try and stay fit enough to complete a number of endurance challenges to raise money for my chosen charities and whilst doing so post it all on the internet!

This is set to be the most challenging, exciting and exhausting year of my life, can I really do it?

"The answer is I don't know,

so why not find out!"

This is me Ben Southall and this is my mission throughout 2008. Stay in contact with my progress updates on how things are going through this site.

I’ll be keeping you informed of my progress through biweekly updates to the site, route information and with regular photo and video blogs.
