The next six weeks are cruical to the success of this fundraising expedition, there are three of the ten challenges to take on, nearly 5,000kms to cover and a multitude of countriesto pass through in order to make it all happen.

Mt Stanley in Uganda is the first of them and one of the most challenging, to reach the base of the mountain involves a three day hike through rainforest and marshland. During the dry season this is still one of the wettest places on the continent so my mettle will be tested to its full again as I battle with a 10 day hike.

From here I have to get to Mt Kilimajaro for October 4th to meet a friend from the UK who is coming out to meet me to share the experience of climbing to the highest point on the African continent, which should take around seven days.

A swift drive down the coast to meet my parents for the first time in eight months and then its a two day drive to climb back up in altitude to Nairobi to complete the fourth marathon in the city!!

This is what it was all about, its challenging, testing and 100% enjoyable too. Afritrex is alive and well.

Ben
I have an 'International Entrants' tour of the course, we all meet at the Durban Exhibition Centre and are then bussed along the course just to highlight exactly where we will die or fail some 48hrs later...rub it in why don't you! Once we return to Durban I'll then register and collect all of the usual freebie giveaway's before I retire to a friends flat, left with my own thoughts whilst trying to keep this 'Afritrex' fire burning deep inside.

Thank you all so much for the huge number of emails and text messages wishing me good luck, they'll all play their part in getting me through those difficult moments enroute to completing my first ever Comrades Race (there positive thoughts already!).

Once I can walk, talk and type again I'll let you know exactly what happened and I'm taking my camera so you can all share in the agony at my expense!

Over and out,

Ben - Afritrex

The 85km Comrades Ultra Marathon from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

I am worried, I am scared but I am also mentally confident that I can make it.

Its the least prepared I have been for any race I have ever taken on in my life and have not been able to physically prepare as I hoped I could for the last 6 weeks due to the conditions placed on me by not having another driver for my vehicle during the trip down the coast, time in which I was hoping to maximise my running stamina and build up to the huge task ahead.

Instead its been a driving race down the west coast just to get here in time and now as I reside in Port Edward for the final few days all I can do is go for a light run each day to keep the joints moving.

This time next week I'll be sore but who knows whether I'll be feeling ecstatic or down in the dumps....

The test is on, Afritrex depends on this Sunday.

Ben

CHALLENGE THREE COMPLETED!

After a gruelling week on some of the worst roads yet between the Nigeria border and Limbe, Cameroon the three vehicles finally had Mount Cameroon in their sights...the location of the next challenge!

An active volcano which pokes its toes into the ocean and rise 4090m above sea level at the summit and presents a steep challenge to those who attempt the climb....just what I did!

The ascent was made in two days and went very well with no ill effects from alitutude sickness or the constant rain during the first day.

The legs felt pretty tired afterwards but its in the bag, another one of the ten challenges completed. The next being the drive down through the Congo, Gabon and DRC and attempting to get to South Africa by June 15th in time for the Comrades Race.

Wish me luck!
